Economic Development Stimulus Strategy

Stimulus Strategy

Council’s Economic Stimulus Strategy aims to overcome the financial and emotional damage caused to the Highlands Community by the demise of the forestry industry through highlighting opportunities in agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, small business, and the development of tourism and infrastructure.

The strategy identifies the urgent need for Federal funding of the Southern Highlands Irrigation Scheme that would bring water to many agricultural properties south of Bothwell for the first time and guarantee supply in the key summer growing months.

It promotes the Highlands Tasmania Brand, the creation of downstream processing facilities in the region, and emphasises Council’s determination to persuade the State government to complete the sealing of the remaining unsealed 21kms of the Highland Lakes Road, which is critical if exports are to make their way, directly, to northern Tasmanian ports.
